Well, we do not blame you if you have never heard anything about Braunschweig.
However, it is a great, beautiful city that has a lot to offer and it is definitely worth a trip.
Also, Braunschweig might be more important to you than you think. You live in Europe and have a radio controlled clock? Guess where it gets the exact time from!
Braunschweig has about 250 000 inhabitants and it is located in Lower Saxony, Germany between Hannover and Berlin, north of the Hartz Mountains.
The mediaeval city of Braunschweig (Brunswick) is the city of Henry the Lion. It was a residence of the Guelphs and a member of the Hanseatic League as well as the state capital. Today the city is also a key focus point in the region. It was named Germany’s City of Science in 2007 and is known as a centre of research and development throughout Europe. Its many attractions and opportunities to follow in the footsteps of its proud history make a visit worthwhile.
This delightful town is characterized by many historic buildings and monuments, as well as the residential palace, which has recently undergone reconstruction. The façade has been faithfully restored. This fine city is ringed by a moat, the historic Onkergraben, flanked today by parks and villas. The wide program of cultural activities ranges from music, film and drama festivals through top-class exhibitions to numerous open-air events. Braunschweig is a green city and is an ideal starting point for trips into a fascinating region full of cultural attractions.

But Braunschweig is not just a really nice city. It is also home of Germany’s oldest University of Technology.
The cornerstone of our modern university was already laid in the year 1745 with the Collegium Carolinum. Today, out of a total student community of around 15,000, there are nearly 1,600 non-German students, from well over 80 different countries, studying here for their first academic degree or within bilateral exchange programs. Over the years, the TU Braunschweig has developed educational links with a great number of foreign universities both on the individual and the institutional level. There are student exchange programs with more than 230 universities all over the world and this network of partners is expanding all the time.
